Days ahead of a pledging summit scheduled later this month, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has announced that its replenishment event to raise US$ 9 billion to fund its next five-year strategy has been deferred to June 2025.
In an announcement late last week on March 7, 2025, a statement said, “Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance along with co-hosts the European Union and the Gates Foundation today announce that the Global Summit: Health & Prosperity through Immunization, in support of Gavi’s next five-year strategic period, will be held in Brussels on 25 June 2025.”
The summit was initially scheduled to be held this month on 19-20 March.
Gavi’s statement said, “The Summit, which will coincide with the European Council Meeting, was previously scheduled 19-20 March 2025. Today’s decision to select a new date was taken collectively to ensure that this Summit is keenly focused on Gavi's core mission of protecting children and communities around the world and helping to protect our world from disease outbreaks.”
Its new five year strategy seeks to protect 500 million children, saving at least 8 million lives from 2026–2030, addressing areas including the threat of pandemics, and protecting communities from conflict, climate change and other global challenges.
A Geneva-based source familiar with the matter said that “As one of the co-hosts of the replenishment, the European Union is currently preoccupied with geopolitics” alluding to global health priorities being pushed backstage.
